Question categories let you organize scored questions into areas such as Budget, Urgency, and Fit. In addition to an overall score, you can calculate and display a separate result for each category.
This is useful for assessments and qualification funnels that evaluate several topics, skills, or dimensions.
For example, a lead qualification assessment could calculate separate scores for Budget, Urgency, and Fit.
ℹ️ Question categories work with scored questions. Add points to your answer options first, then assign the questions to categories so that each category produces a meaningful result.
Open Question Categories
You can open the Question categories modal in two places:
From the funnel settings, open the Question Categories tab.
From a supported question element, open its settings, open the Categories dropdown, and click Manage.
Both options open the same modal, where you can create categories and manage the questions assigned to them.
Create a Category
Click Add category, enter a name, and select a color. The color helps you distinguish the category in the editor and when displaying its results.
Each category card shows the number of questions assigned to it and the maximum score those questions can reach, for example, “3 questions, up to 12 points.”
To remove a category, select it and click the trash icon.
Assign Questions to a Category
Select a category, then use Search questions to add to find and select the questions you want to include. The page number shown next to each question helps you locate it in your funnel.
A question can belong to one or more categories. When a question belongs to multiple categories, the points earned from its answer count toward each assigned category.
You can also assign categories directly from a question element’s settings by using the Categories dropdown.
Normalize Category Scores
By default, Normalize on scale is turned off. Each category therefore uses its raw score and its own maximum possible number of points.
For example, if a category contains two questions worth up to three points each, its maximum score is six points.
Turn on Normalize on scale to display every category on the same scale, making the results easier to compare.
When normalization is enabled:
The Scale is set to 100 by default, but you can enter a different value.
Each category gets a Maximum points on scale setting.
The maximum defaults to the highest score that can be reached from the questions in that category.
You can turn on Customize to set a different maximum manually.
For example, if a category has a maximum raw score of six and the scale is set to 100, a raw score of four is displayed as 66.7 out of 100.
Normalization is particularly useful when categories have different maximum scores. Without normalization, a category with a maximum of 20 points cannot be compared directly with one that has a maximum of 10 points.
ℹ️ Normalizing category scores is especially useful when displaying several categories in the same Graph.
Display Category Scores
Category scores are displayed through the Score element. You can add a Score element that is already configured for question categories by selecting Category Scores under Formulas & Results.
The Category Scores option requires at least one question category. If no categories have been created, the option is disabled and you will be prompted to create one under Funnel Options → Question Categories.
To display category scores:
Open the page where you want to display the results.
Find Category Scores under Formulas & Results.
Add it to the page.
Open the Score element settings.
Confirm that Question categories is selected under Show score based on.
Configure how the category results should appear.
You can also add a regular Score element and select Question categories under Show score based on.
From the Score element settings, you can:
Show or hide result bars.
Show or hide the maximum possible score.
Limit how many categories are displayed.
Change the separator between the score and the maximum score.
Open Manage question categories to review or update your categories.
Category Scores can be displayed on regular pages and outcome pages in any funnel type.
Display Question Categories in a Graph
Use a Graph when you want participants to compare several category results visually.
To display all question categories:
Add a Graph element to the page where you want to display the results.
Select one of the multiple-value graph types.
Open Source data.
Select All Question Categories.
Customize the category labels, colors, and benchmark markers as needed.
Example: Lead Qualification Assessment
A consulting agency could create a lead qualification assessment with three question categories:
Budget: whether the lead has the resources required for the service
Urgency: how soon the lead wants to solve the problem
Fit: how closely the lead’s needs match the service offered
Questions can be assigned to the relevant categories throughout the funnel. For example, a question about the expected project budget can contribute to Budget, while a question about the desired start date can contribute to Urgency.
The Category Scores option can display a clear breakdown of the lead’s results, while a Graph can provide a visual comparison of all three categories.
For example, a lead might score highly for Urgency and Fit but lower for Budget. Showing these category results provides more useful context than displaying only one overall score.
In this lead qualification example, the participant scored 66.7% for Budget, 16.7% for Urgency, and 33.3% for Fit. The Category Scores element shows each result separately, while the radar Graph makes it easy to compare all three areas visually.
Current Availability
Question category results can currently be displayed inside the funnel using the Score and Graph elements.
Category results are not yet available for email automation, integrations, or other post-submission uses.
Things to Keep in Mind
Question categories work with scored questions, so set points on your answer options first.
A question can sit in multiple categories, and its points count toward each one.
The "up to" points on each category reflect the highest score its questions can reach with your current scoring.
